Board Members Present: Jennifer Budde, Carol Sue Stayrook Hobbs, Steve Richards, Matt Treaster, Toby Tyner

In the June 18 board meeting, the Newton School Board approved the board goals for the 2018-2019 school year with a 5-0 vote. The goals are as follows:

  • Build inspirational, responsive and reciprocal relationships with USD 373 community
  • Provide rigorous relevant and result-oriented teaching and learning
  • Utilize assets and resources in ways that model stewardship and provide exceptional learning environments, accessibility, and equitability

The board also approved the Santa Fe 5/6 Launch Plan Redesign (5-0), the 2018-2019 student handbooks (5-0) and two gift requests (5-0). The first gift was a 1993 Grand Marquis given to Newton High School for their auto class. The donation was from Dana Shifflet. The second gift was water for the summer food program. This gift was made by Bethel College Mennonite Church.

The school board also decided not to continue discussion on grade reconfiguration in the near future, leaving the current grade set up as it is. They also discussed class-size policy and school boundaries. The board requested more information on the current boundaries.

Updates from District Employees

The school board also heard two updates from district employees. The first from Corinna Enns, a seventh-grade science teacher. She spoke about moving to an integrated model of science curriculum instead of a discipline-based model. The sixth-grade class will be adopting the integrated model in the 2018-2019 school year. Seventh grade will adopt the curriculum the following year.

The school board also received an update from Ron Henrich, interim maintenance director, on Newton High School’s air conditioning. Ron explained to the board that the compressor went out. The current compressor used R22 refrigerant which will no longer be manufactured after 2020. The district is looking at various options:

  • Repair the 1995 unit
  • Replace the 1995 unit with the same type of unit (water-cooled)
  • Replace the 1995 unit with an air-cooled system

The district is also looking at a temporary system for the beginning of the school year. Once the district gets the information necessary for an informed decision, the board will take action.

BOE Updates--June 4 Posted 6/11/18

In Monday’s USD 373 Board of Education meeting, the board approved a resolution to reduce the bond debt of the Newton School District.

The resolution authorized and provided for the sale, insurance and delivery of remaining general obligation refunding bonds. This measure saves $112,000. This amount was approximately $4,000 more than initially reported to the board in May.

Steve Shorgren of George K Baum & Company, an investment banking firm from Wichita that the school district consulted with on the project., presented the details of the sale. Following his presentation, the board approved the motion with a 6-0 vote.
