NEWTON, Kan. (USD 373) - A Newton High School sophomore with an interest in pharmacy got a look behind the scenes at NMC Health on a recent visit.

A partnership between NMC Health and Newton High School gave Virgil Guo the opportunity to visit directly with Pharmacy Director Allen Graber and CEO Val Gleason. Allen took Guo to the Pharmacy for a tour and an opportunity to see the drug purchasing process and efforts made to prevent bacteria from getting into medication.

“I have always been interested in medicine and helping others that are in need,” Guo said.

The interest runs in the family: Guo’s aunt is a pharmacist in China.

It’s the range of possibilities in pharmacy that interests Guo, from retail to research, or the hospital setting.

In China, retail pharmacies are open 24 hours a day, leading to longer shifts, according to Guo.

“The field of pharmacy is neverending in information, which is something I look forward to in a career. I have also realized that I have an extremely weak stomach, so the chances of me becoming a physician, surgeon, dentist, etc. are very low,” Guo said.

Guo is currently enrolled in Anatomy & Physiology and Honors Chemistry II, both key courses on his path to becoming a pharmacist.
